The Making and Meaning of WE ARE FAMILY
approx: 12 minute trailer
http://www.wearefamilyfoundation.com/dvd.asp
Tommy Boy Films presents The Making and Meaning of WE ARE FAMILY, a Globalvision production by Emmy-award winning producer/director Danny Schechter and an official 2001 Sundance Film Festival selection.

Filmed just eleven days after the events of September 11, The Making and Meaning of WE ARE FAMILY captures the gathering of more than 200 music, film, television and sports personalities along with police officers, emergency room doctors and those most affected by the tragedy, as they assembled to re-record the classic hit song "We Are Family" as a musical call for tolerance and global understanding.

Legendary music producer & songwriter Nile Rodgers, who co-wrote the Sister Sledge classic hit with his late partner Bernard Edwards, created and directed the project and is featured in the film. Still sung worldwide, "We Are Family" is a joyous anthem, an affirmation of values and spirit.

The new all-star version, recorded on September 22 & 23, 2001, was crafted to lift spirits and act as a catalyst toward the healing process. The film WE ARE FAMILY, directed by Globalvision's Emmy Award-winning Danny Schechter (with Patrice O'Neill), documents recording sessions in both New York and Los Angeles against a background of the traumatic events of September 11 and their aftermath.

Spike Lee directed the music video of the 2001 version, which is showcased in the film. More than a music film, WE ARE FAMILY explores the shock and personal pain of the participants as well as the eruption of hate crimes following the tragedy. In addition to footage of the recording sessions and one-on-one interviews with participants, the film explores the need for tolerance and community spirit via commentary during the sessions and also with New Yorkers at vigils around the city.

WE ARE FAMILY was hailed at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, where it played to capacity audiences and evoked standing ovations as part of a special program of films exploring the events of September 11.

Danny Schechter, a veteran ABC 20/20 producer, has won many awards for his films, including the International Documentary Award for the making of Sun City: Artists Against Apartheid. Most recently he prodocued Counting on Democracy featuring Greg Palast. He is a Founder of Globalvision, Inc. [www.globalvision.org] Proceeds from the sale of the film go to the We Are Family Project, benefiting those affected by the events of September 11.

Afghan Masacre: Convoy of Death
17 minute trailer

Produced and directed by Irish filmmaker and former BBC producer Jamie Doran and Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi, the film tells the story of thousands of prisoners who surrendered to the US military’s Afghan allies after the siege of Kunduz. According to the film, some three thousand of the prisoners were forced into sealed containers and loaded onto trucks for transport to Sheberghan prison. When the prisoners began shouting for air, U.S.-allied Afghan soldiers fired directly into the truck, killing many of them. The rest suffered through an appalling road trip lasting up to four days, so thirsty they clawed at the skin of their fellow prisoners as they licked perspiration and even drank blood from open wounds.

Witnesses say that when the trucks arrived and soldiers opened the containers, most of the people inside were dead. They also say US Special Forces re-directed the containers carrying the living and dead into the desert and stood by as survivors were shot and buried. Now, up to three thousand bodies lie buried in a mass grave.

Outraged human rights groups and lawyers are calling for an investigation but the U.N. special envoy to Afghanistan refuses any U.N.-backed investigation until the Afghan government can protect witnesses. Two of the witnesses in the film have already been killed.

The Great Deception
40 minutes
http://www.visiontv.ca/Archive/Archive.html

Media critic Barrie Zwicker, the host of VisionTV’s Insight: Mediafile, is one of the few North American journalists to offer an alternative viewpoint on the Sept. 11 tragedy. In this provocative six-part series of Mediafile commentaries, he challenges the official explanation for the attacks and considers the troubling implications of America’s new war.

Poring over a wealth of published material, Zwicker finds much that has gone unexamined -- from the apparent breakdown of American air defenses on Sept. 11, to the longstanding ties between U.S. intelligence and Osama bin Laden. He also takes a hard look at the actions of President George W. Bush in the midst of the crisis. And he ventures to ask what role U.S. oil interests may have played in these events. Zwicker's carefully researched analysis has prompted more e-mails, letters and phone calls than any single program in the VisionTV (Canada) history. Ultimately, it compels the viewer to ponder the unanswered question: Whose interests are really served by the 'war on terrorism'

Barrie Zwicker is a broadcaster and writer who has specialized in media criticism since 1970 and has been media critic at Vision TV Canada since the inception in the Fall of 1988. Currently he produces the Eye Opener segment for Vision's weekly current affairs program 360 Vision.  The former Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Vancouver Province, Sudbury Star and Detroit News writer taught the Media & Society course at Ryerson Polytechnic University for seven years. He owned and published Content magazine for as long, and founded Sources, a free information service for journalists, writers, editors and researchers.
