The Fourth Annual Festival of the South Asian Diaspora

SALAAM Theatre company members head west for the 2003 ArtWallah Festival - showcasing expressions of the South Asian diaspora.  Below is just a taste of what's happening.  Check out www.artwallah.org for more info on the film, dance, music, poetry/literature and visual artists that will be participating!  Names in BOLD are SALAAMers representing the EAST COAST -- Holla!!!  Special shout-outs to Sandy Lee, Jon Imparato and the rest of the Village staff who made it possible for us to feel at home, far away from home and for always being there with advise and a solution!

Raisins, Not Virgins by Sharbari Zohra Ahmed
Staged Reading directed by Geeta Citygirl
In the Renberg Theater
featuring Puja Lalmalani, Mikhail Islam, Rashmi, Julio-Alexi Genao and Geeta Citygirl.
This is a story of a Bangladeshi-American woman who decides to embark on her own version of Jihad, which essentially entails a great deal of drinking and a dubious art project.  She initially embarks on this journey out of anger at the Islamic faith, which she feels no place for her, and at her inability to be both American and Muslim. Eventually, the “jihad” leads her to reclaim Islam and allows her to fashion an American identity.

Check out this comedic reading about two Indian “superheroes” that meet in a convenience store in mid-Ohio and plot to take over the world!

Day time programming for Saturday and Sunday is a suggested donation of $5, collected upon entry -- no advance purchase for day events are available.  Evening show tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door.

EVENING Program:

Thursday, June 26th kicks off ArtWallah with an event dedicated to Los Angeles-based talent beginning at 8pm. General admission is $15, student admission with valid ID is $10.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hosts ArtWallah's acclaimed 3-hour Evening Show.  Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 pm; the Sunday performance begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door. The Friday performance will be preceeded by a complimentary wine and cheese gallery reception beginning at 6 pm.

Please note: The evening programming sells out, so it is recommended that you purchase your tickets in advance.  As a courtesy to our performers and audience, we will NOT be seating late arrivals until intermission. So please allow ample time to park and to pick up your tickets at will call. The box office will be open one and a half hours before the show.
