Ahmed's Raisins not Virgins - Since September 11, 2001, the playwright has been asking herself, What does it mean to be a Muslim woman in America? Do I want to be a Muslim woman? Said Ahmed, "Sept 11th has forced me to face the fact that Muslims would now be the most hated people in the nation, and maybe some of that hatred actually came from within. Did I really despise Islam and what did that mean for my personal happiness?" an excerpt from Bina Sharif's Democracy in Islam - Islam is a cultural phenomenon in 24 countries of the world. "Democracy in Islam" reflects on the meaning behind these complicated, loaded words and examines the representation of Muslims and Islamic culture in America and the West, in general. Through the portrayal of a South Asian Muslim family, Bina Sharif explores the modern aspects to Islam, including the drinking, dancing, and liberalism that is buried beneath a conservative image of what Islam is believed to be. This is Sharif's latest work and will premiere at Theater For the New City in November. concluding with our monthly musical segment, Tunefulness traditional Q&A and reception w/light snacks and drinks to follow SALAAM at
