Note from DJ REKHA:
We can’t believe it’s been a year since the first Bollywood Disco.  I always wanted to do a night focused on filmi music, but it wasn’t till last spring that the words Bollywood Disco popped into my head.   It all made sense.  The music of Bollywood that I was most in love was the disco sounds I grew up on - Helen, Qurbani, Amitab and of course Bappi Lahiri.  Mr. Lahiri is scheduled to make an appearance at our one year anniversary to celebrate the release of his new CD Bappiwood Remixes (free CD giveaways). Remember he successfully sued Dr. Dre for unauthorized used of Thora Raeshem Lak ta Hai from the movie Jyothi.  We are also super excited to have anniversary coincide with the new Bollywood Dreams (Phaidon Press) book by Jonathan Torgovnik.  This coffee table book is An Exploration of the Motion Picture Industry and its Culture in India.

Bollywood, n. The Indian film industry, based in Bombay; Bombay regarded as the base of this industry.
dis·co n. Popular dance music, especially of the late 1970s, characterized by strong repetitive bass rhythms.

*The Party: Since Bollywood Disco’s launch on May 15, 2002 founder DJ Rekha has dusted off the musical gems of Bombay for a core audience of Bollywood fanatics and a growing number of New York’s hipsterati. Interest in the event has contributed to an increasing awareness of Bollywood as a cultural force--and source of fresh ideas for Western music & film, illustrated by Bollywood tributes in hit songs like Truth Hurts "Addictive" and hit films like Moulin Rouge.  It's only fitting that the party’s 1-year anniversary also launches the official release of Phaidon book’s Bollywood Dreams, a huge milestone for the genre’s recognition in the West.

*The Book: The first book from award-winning photographer Jonathan Torgovnik, Bollywood Dreams is an expansive portfolio documenting the phenomenon that is India’s film industry. 100+ original color photographs explore every aspect of the Bollywood experience, from candid behind-the-scenes moments to the mesmerizing screen spectacles that draw 14 million people to the cinema on a single day in India alone.

*The Legend: In addition to the international attention he has recently received for "Thoda Rashem," Bappi Lahiri has long been a cult figure in India for adapting disco beats to Indian song. With hits like Disco Dancer and Namak Halal he single-handedly defined the soundtrack to the golden age of masala films and accumulated numerous awards for originality and prolific output.  After witnessing his music propel "Addictive" to #2 on the Billboard R&B chart (and inspire several successful remixes for the Indian market), Lahiri has taken his legacy into his own hands with his Bappiwood remix project. Joined by his son and protégé Bappa for this rare live appearance, Lahiri bypasses the usual mega-stadiums to bring his larger than life presence directly to the club-going audience responsible for his current wave of popularity.

*The Night: For this landmark event, DJ Rekha is joined two renowned colleagues. Darshan Jesrani, a regularly featured DJ at Bollywood Disco, has also shaped the revival of New York's Paradise Garage-era nightlife as 1/2 of avant-disco outfit Metro Area (and their monthly Party Out of Bounds night at APT). Another frequent guest, Eddie Stats comes to the tables fresh from excavating Bollywood vinyl in the bazaars of Mumbai. In addition to an open bar and reduced admission from 9-10pm, Bollywood Dreams author Jonathon Torgovnik will be on hand to sign first-run copies for interested parties.
