Farouk Abdel-Muhti has lived in this country for more than 25 years. His 24-year-old son Tarek is a native-born citizen of the United States. Farouk has been actively defending the cause of the Palestinian people and the rights of all workers and immigrants. In the early morning of April 26, 2002, NYPD and INS agents arrived at the home of Bernard McFall, threatening to break down the door if he did not let them in. They then arrested his guest, Farouk Abdel-Muhti. Farouk was arrested at a time when he was publicizing the murders and other abuses of the Israeli government against the Palestinian people, especially during the invasion of the West Bank and Gaza by the Israeli military. The weeks prior to his arrest, he was a regular guest on the WBAI program "Wake Up Call," where he helped arrange live radio interviews with Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. Immediately after his arrest he was threatened with being turned over to the Israeli government. Since his arrest, Farouk has been organizing other prisoners against INS detentions and the conditions in prison. He was involved in the creation of a statement in which more than 75 detainees from 40 countries protested their situation. He has been shuffled around among three different prisons in New Jersey in an unsuccessful attempt to stop his organizing. He is currently held at Passaic County jail in Paterson.
