ABOUT THE FILM . . . . . . . . . .

In this award-winning film, Sen takes on the issue of Hindu-Muslim conflict in India with personal resonance and universal poignancy.  Mr. & Mrs. Iyer is a love story about two unlikely traveling companions drawn to each other under harrowing circumstances.

Meenakshi Iyer (Konkona Sen Sharma, Aparna Sen’s daughter, accomplished theatre and Bengali cinema actress) is a married Tamil woman traveling to Calcutta with her nine-month old son.  With her is Raja Chowdhury (Rahul Bose of English, August, Split Wide Open and Takshak fame) a wildlife photographer and recent acquaintance. When communal riots break out, hitting a crescendo with a “search” for Muslims by Hindu vigilantes on their bus, Mrs. Iyer and Mr. Chowdhury find themselves bound together in an unexpected relationship of trust and interdependence.

Begun before the World Trade Center attack and completed before the Gujarat riots of 2002, Mr and Mrs Iyer is eerily prescient to the kind of horrific violence, intolerance, and helplessness experienced by many in recent months.  The triumph of love in times of misery portrayed with powerful aesthetic and political nuances is Sen’s great accomplishment.
