SALAAM 3rd Mondays
THIRTY DAYS IN SEPTEMBER
Mahesh Dattani's latest play Thirty Days In September, was recently produced at the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai, India. A play about love and betrayal, 'Thirty Days' treats the sensitive and generally taboo issue of child sexual abuse. The play has been supported by RAHI (Recovering And Healing From Incest), a Delhi-based support centre for adult women survivors of childhood abuse. 'Thirty Days' endeavors to lift the veil of silence which surrounds child sexual abuse and addresses the issue unflinchingly. Mahesh Dattani is one of India's best-known playwrights. A winner of the Sahitya Akademi award, Dattani has a theatre studio in Bangalore, called "Playpen", where he conducts workshops on acting, playwriting and directing. In 1986, he wrote his first full-length play, Where There's a Will, and quickly established himself as a young playwright to watch. Since then, his play Bravely Fought the Queen has been given a critically acclaimed staging at Britain's prestigious Leicester Haymarket Theater, as well as in India's leading theaters in Bombay and Calcutta. Dattani also writes for BBC Radio and is involved in an international project commemorating the 600th anniversary of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. His collected plays have been published by Penguin, and last year, two of his plays, Dance Like A Man and On A Muggy Night in Mumbai were produced in New York at the Tribeca Arts Center.
