MELA:
A SOUTH ASIAN FESTIVAL

A celebratory fair highlighting South Asian performing arts in our Western culture: film, theatre, dance, music and leading South Asian stand-up comedians. MELA, meaning "fair" in Hindi, will showcase performing and visual arts that include new works and classics.

VENUE: Baruch Performing Arts Center
23rd - 25th Streets and Lexington Avenue, NYC.
The BPAC is located at 55 Lexington Avenue (between 24th and 25th Streets), on the 25th Street side, between Lexington and 3rd Avenue).The entrance is located in the middle of the block on the south side of the street.

MELA will feature...

KALIGHAT : A Play by Paul Knox
KALIGHAT, a new play written and directed by Paul Knox, with choreography by Myna Mukherjee.  Set in Mother Teresa's home for the dying in Calcutta, the environmental ensemble play follows the journey of a group of Western volunteers and the lives of the nuns and patients who inhabit Kalighat, and explores issues of cross-cultural communication, disparity, the essence of service and the intersection of sexuality and religion set against a realistic backdrop of terminal poverty.  Produced by Circle East, Baruch Performing Arts Center and IAAC.  Kalighat has enjoyed development support at Circle Repertory Company, Circle East, LaMama, HERE, and with the Indo-American Arts Council.  Show runs January 21st - February 15th, 2004.  www.smarttix.com, 212-868-4444.

NAYIKAS : Odissi Dance Theatre
Derived from Sanskrit Nayikas means 'voices of the feminine, heroines or actresses'.  NAYIKAS will perform in repertory with Kalighat at the festival. It is New York's first resident classical Indian Odissi dance theater company; one of the only classical yet contemporary dance ensembles of multiethnic comprise in the South Asian Diaspora.  'Samita - the Infinite within ', the current repertoire is an exploration of the frameworks of Odissi, seeking new space within its traditional boundaries.  Choreographed to reflect the paradigm shift in solo vs. ensemble work, Samita uses the stage as partner and instrument to create symmetry within asymmetric spatial patterns.  Performances 8pm on January 27, 28, 29 and February 7, 8, 9 at the Baruch Performing Arts Center's Nagelberg Theatre at 25th St & Lexington - Entrance 25th Street.  Tickets $25 / $19 Students & Seniors / $15 with Baruch ID.

CLASSICAL INDIAN MUSIC, a medley of vibrant and rich classical melodies from India. The program features ragas (classical Indian verse), bhajans (devotional song) and ghazals (poetic song) by celebrated North Indian classical singer Marina Alam, a disciple of Pandit Jasraj, accompanied by Tapan Modak and Madhu Vora.  This musical night will take place on Jan 26th 2004 from 8-10pm at Baruch College, Engelman Recital Hall.  Tickets are $10/$5 with Baruch College Student ID.  Student/Senior tix $8.

INDIAN FUSION & JAZZ, features talented musicians who come together to reflect the South Asian Diaspora, combining Indian classical, folk, jazz and other modern musical forms. Isheeta Ganguly, Athul Prashar, Neil Dave & Ravi Sukhandan draw on the best of both worlds, blending the melodic and rhythmic richness of Western and Indian musical traditions.  POSTCARD: INDIAN FUSION & JAZZ, features talented musicians blending Indian classical, folk structure, jazz and other modern music forms with the richness of Western & Indian music.  This musical night will take place on Feb 2nd 2004 from 8-10pm at Baruch College, Engelman Recital Hall.  Tickets are $10/$5 with Baruch College Student ID.  Student/Senior tix $8.

Laff-O-Rama is a night of stand-up comedy that showcases some of the top South Asian comics in the United States and England today. In a post-911 world, Laff-O-Rama's comics explore the painfully funny experiences of life during wartime, growing up gay in India, an immigrant upbringing in white suburbia and the hassles of being mistaken for a terrorist. Laff-O-Rama is produced by Sholay Productions as part of MELA and will be held on Thursday, February 5th 8:30pm at Baruch Performing Arts Center, Mason Hall, 17 Lexington Avenue at 23rd Street in NYC.  Tickets are $10/ $5 with Baruch College student ID. THE FILMS OF SATYAJIT RAY - commemorating the renowned Indian film director and Academy Award winner (Lifetime Achievement) Satyajit Ray, known for his humanistic approach to cinema. The film series will debut newly restored films for Mr. Ray, which have been generously restored at the the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Archives (AMPASA) in Beverly Hills, CA initiated through the efforts of the Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The film series will feature a lecture/presentation by noted Ray scholar and authority, Professor Dilip K. Basu.

MELA: A SOUTH ASIAN FESTIVAL, presented by Baruch Performing Arts Center and the Indo American Arts Council with student sponsorship from Club India.

Baruch Performing Arts Center (BPAC) is a new state-of-the art performance center at Baruch College. Baruch, known for its emphasis on Business, opened a performing arts center in October 2002, with its goal to infuse art into the curriculum, college life and the community, emphasizing creative and critical problem solving, a key tool in business as well as personal life situations.

Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC) supports all the artistic disciplines in classical, fusion, folk and innovative forms influenced by the arts of India. IACC works cooperatively with colleagues around the United States to broaden our collective audiences and to create a network for shared information, resources and funding. The focus is to help artists and art organizations in North America as well as to facilitate artists from India to exhibit, perform and produce their work here.
