Playwrights' Festival

SALAAM Theatre
Geeta Citygirl, Artistic Director invites you to submit to the
2003 SOUTH ASIAN DIASPORA PLAYWRIGHTS' FESTIVAL

CALL FOR PLAY SUBMISSIONS

Seeking scripts for the 2003 South Asian Diaspora Playwrights’ Festival, taking place November 9 through 16, 2003.  The project, focused on providing play development resources and community support to playwrights in the South Asian Diaspora, will be co-produced by the Indo-American Arts Council and The Lark Play Development Center in association with participating theatres in New York’s South Asian community including SALAAM Theatre.  The IAAC is passionately dedicated to building an awareness of Indian theatre and artists in mainstream America.  The Lark supports the discovery and development of emerging theatre voices in America and from around the world.

Full-length plays, written in English, will be reviewed and selected by theatre professionals appointed by the IAAC, The Lark and participating South Asian theatre companies.  Selection criteria are excellence, diversity and suitability to live performance.  Plays may be written by playwrights in the South Asian Diaspora or about issues or themes related to the South Asian Diaspora experience.  Submission guidelines are below.

Selected playwrights will be invited to The Lark to develop their work and to exchange ideas with other theatre artists. The Lark will provide each writer with a creative team composed of a director, actors and dramaturgical support. Each play will receive ten hours of rehearsals and two public readings. There will be an opportunity to debrief on the process at the end of the week. Playwrights are required to attend all rehearsals of their own plays as well as all festival events. Playwrights are responsible for their own travel costs, living expenses and housing arrangements in New York City.

  • Plays may be written by playwrights in the South Asian Diaspora or about issues or themes related to the South Asian Diaspora experience.
